Do I need to be in shape to run an obstacle course race?
No, you do not need to be fit to run Toughest. You decide how easy or hard your race experience is going to be. Our races are designed so that everyone, regardless of fitness and training level can complete them according to their own abilities. Run the race in your own pace and walk/rest if you need to. The important part is to challenge yourself and expand your comfort zone. Mental strength and grit is more important than physical strength.
Too difficult? Skip the obstacle or take the penalty round (a short jog).
Too easy? Try our unique “Fast Lanes,” which are more challenging alternatives to the standard obstacles.
Need help and support on the course? Run with your friends, colleagues or family and help each other out to beat the obstacles.
We offer the following race types:
- Main: The full, award-winning experience. (ca. 8 km)
- Xplore: No pressure, just have fun! Perfect for beginners or those looking for a lighter challenge. (ca. 4 km)
- Family: Fun for your entire family and friend group. Not ready for Main or Xplore? Then Family is the race for you! From 5 years or older. (ca. 2 km)
- Double Distance: Can't get enough? Run 2 laps on our Main race!
Read more about the differences.
However, if time tracking and competitive results are important to you, or if you wish to run in our competition classes, you must be physically fit.
Do I need to be able to swim when I run your obstacle courses?
Ability to swim is not a requirement, but it is however recommended if you want to complete all obstacles on courses containing water obstacles. Distance in the water varies and can be up to 20 m (note that water is only present on selected races). We do our best to place the race track in shallow water so that everyone can pass, regardless of swimming ability.
If you are unsure, you can always skip the water obstacle and continue the race. It is your responsibility to assess your abilities. Do not hesitate to contact us for guidance.
All children are offered a life vest before larger water obstacles on our Family and Xplore races.
Do I need to run with kids on Toughest Family?
No, you do not need to run with kids. Our family race is for everyone and is popular amongst solo runners, friend groups and companies looking for a lighter challenge. Perfect if you're unsure and want to try obstacle course racing for the first time!
Is Toughest a good race for kids?
Yes! Toughest is a fun and challenging race for children of all ages. Toughest Family and Toughest Xplore have shorter courses and many obstacles are adjusted so that kids kan participate. Run without pressure or time tracking. Just have fun on our obstacles and enjoy some outdoor quality time! When you cross the finish line, you have gathered loads of memories and a well-deserved medal around your neck.
Are there any risks involved in obstacle course racing?
Obstacle course racing (OCR) is more challenging than other traditional sports, but as long as you take it easy on the course and are aware of your own abilities, you will cross the finish line with a smile on your face. We do our absolute best to give you the most safe and memorable experience possible. With experience from organizing races for over 220.000 runners over the years, we have acquired the knowledge and skill to create an experience where you can feel safe.
Learn more about common injuries for beginners and how to avoid them.
Can I run the race as a beginner?
Of course! Toughest has many races suitable for beginners. Toughest Family and Toughest Xplore are perfect if you're trying obstacle course racing (OCR) for the first time, or if you're looking for a lighter challenge.
Shorter courses, no time tracking, unlimited retries and the hardest obstacles are removed. You are in control of your race experience and decide how hard or easy it should be. When you're ready we encourage you yo try the Toughest Main race.
Have a go and discover that you're tougher than you think!

Is it safe to run an obstacle course race (OCR)?
Your safety is our top priority whenever you run a Toughest race. We always have trained medical staff on-site, ready to assist if an accident occurs. Volunteers are stationed throughout the course to ensure you stay on track and to monitor that obstacles are being completed safely. We have also placed water stations along the course so you can drink as needed. Start groups and times are regulated to maintain a steady flow of participants throughout the race. For larger water obstacles, life jackets are provided for all children (read more). As opposed to some other obstacle course races, we don't have obstacles designed to cause physical pain (such as fire or electricity).
No obstacles are mandatory, and you choose which challenges you want to take on (specific rules apply to our competitive classes). Feel free to rest or walk whenever you need to. The most important thing is that you challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone. We encourage you to try every obstacle (you’re capable of more than you think!), but it is ultimately up to you to assess your own abilities.
With years of experience hosting races for over 220.000 runners, we have gained the knowledge, expertise, and proven methods to create an experience where you can feel safe from start to finish.
If you have any questions regarding safety, please feel free to contact us!
Which race should I sign up for?
